EUFORGEN Policy Brief: Forest Reproductive Material is vital to secure Europe's forests
Forest reproductive materials (FRM) are seeds and seedlings that can be used to grow new forests. FRM are essential for maintaining and restoring forest ecosystems and play a vital role in forest adaptation to climate change.
Rapid climate change is outpacing the ability of tree populations to adapt through simple natural evolutionary mechanisms. The aim of forest management should therefore be to improve genetic diversity and accelerate genetic adaptation to increase forest resilience. This may require the introduction of forest reproductive material (FRM), as well as encouraging natural regeneration.
To raise awareness of the importance of forest reproductive material to ensure forest resilience, EUFORGEN has produced a policy brief for policy makers, based on the report Genetic aspects linked to production and use of forest reproductive material (FRM), which succinctly reflects the state of knowledge on the genetic aspects related to the production and use of FRM and provides key messages on the chain of actions and adequate practices for the sustainable management and appropriate use of FRM.
