A recent paper published in Frontiers in Plant Science studies the phylogeographic distribution of one of the riparian tree species most affected by human activities: the European white elm (Ulmus laevis Pall).

By exploring the genetic structure of this European forest tree species through whole plastome sequencing, this work extended the natural range of U. laevis in Europe to northwestern Italy, as a result of a post glacial recolonization from the Balkan peninsula.

The work highlights the importance of using genetic information for proper management and conservation of endangered species.
