Status of Buxus balearica conservation in Europe
Balearic boxwood is genetically like other boxwood species, such as long-leaved common boxwood (B. longifola), with which it still shares haplotypes (Di Domenico, 2013). However, it can be genetically differentiated, even if the differences are difficult to identify phenologically. This difference occurred over time as historically isolated populations became more different. Hybridization of the species is relatively easy and may have occurred naturally. In populations of Balearic boxwood in Spain some individuals have hairy shoots, like European boxwood, and it is thought these individuals are hybrids of the two species (Di Domenico, 2013).

The species is under threat of extinction, especially in isolated populations. Diseases such as boxwood blight and pests such as boxwood moth have reduced populations by up to 90 per cent in Türkiye (Sari, Çelikel, and Yas, 2022). Boxwood blight includes multiple species of blight and is a huge threat to boxwood populations. However, research has shown that Balearic boxwood may be the most blight-resistant species (LaMondia and Shishkoff, 2017). This resistance increases the value of the Balearic boxwood for all boxwood species as it could be used to breed hybrids and cultivars that are resistant to blight (LaMondia and Shishkoff, 2017).
