University of Zurich thematic workshop 2025 – Beech Genomes for the Future
Join the Beech Genomes for the Future workshop on 4 April 2025 to explore genetic adaptation, drought tolerance, and climate resilience of European beech forests for future conservation strategies.
The University of Zurich will host a thematic workshop titled Beech Genomes for the Future on 4 April 2025, at the Irchel Campus in Zurich. Organised by Sofia van Moorsel, Domitille Coq-Etchegaray, Toja Guerra, and Meredith Schuman, this event will focus on European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and its potential to adapt to climate change.
European beech is highly sensitive to drought, a challenge that has become more pressing with rising temperatures and dry spells in Europe. The 2018 drought in Switzerland caused significant tree dieback, and future models predict major declines in beech population growth. However, some populations may show greater drought resilience, offering hope for their future survival.
The workshop will bring together researchers to explore the genetic basis of drought tolerance in beech. Through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and other experimental approaches, participants will discuss how genomic variation influences beech’s ability to withstand heat and drought, and how genetic diversity can be conserved and managed.
The event is aimed at researchers in the fields of genomics, climate impact studies, and forest management, providing an opportunity to share insights, discuss challenges, and strengthen professional networks. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of available tools and strategies to address the pressing issue of beech forest conservation in a changing climate.
