Decision support tool for the management of dynamic genetic conservation units

The decision support tool for the management of dynamic genetic conservation units (GCUs) gives practical details to GCU managers on how to identify threats and manage GCUs with a long-term perspective. It explains how to introduce new types of GCUs by including marginal and peripheral populations, and how to integrate additional basic information from GCUs into EUFGIS information system. It also paves the way to monitoring the effect of forest management actions on the GCUs.

This working group further built on “Approaches to the conservation of forest genetic resources in Europe in the context of climate change”. In that study, the working group considered a wide range of potential threats and developed a preliminary decision support tool to aid the identification and management of populations most in need of conservation. The proposed decision support tool presented in the report was a preliminary draft.

Selected members of the working group attended the final meeting of the COST Action on marginal populations to build on its main findings and outputs.

The group's meetings

The working group on the decision support tool met twice: on 24-28 October 2016 in Rome, Italy and on 29-31 August 2017 in Zurich, Switzerland. They continued their work through a co-chair meeting 2019 in Ljubliana and virtual meetings until 2020 when the final report was released.
