Watch the latest EUFORGEN webinar: Mediterranean stone pines under attack

Published: 3/05/2024

The EUFORGEN webinar "Mediterranean stone pines under attack: the invasion of the pine tortoise scale", held in May 2024, addressed the threat of the pine tortoise scale insect to the species from different angles, focusing on the potential of forest genetic research to find solutions, with a diverse panel of leading experts and researchers.

Followed by more than 80 online participants, the EUFORGEN Secretariat brought together four experts in this webinar held on Thursday 2 May 2024: Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat (EFI Mediterranean Facility, Spain) , Bruno Fady (INRAE, France), Giuseppe Scarascia-Mugnozza (EFI Biocities Facility, Italy), Maurizio Sabatti (University of Tuscia, Italy).

Through their presentations and interaction with the audience, experts and participants shared scientific arguments on the role of the importance of this tree species for the Mediterranean and its particular low genetic diversity. By knowing a bit more about the context and the characteristics of this species, it was discussed how the breakout in Italy of the pine tortoise scale insect is a big challenge beyond the national scale. Although some control measures and efforts are being carried out, there are still many open questions on how to make this species more resilient to climate change threats. Can forest regenetic research bring hope for potential solutions?
